Names are a huge deal in the series, and the sense I get is that especially from the way that its set up in the first book, theres a kind of playfulness to Gnag the Nameless, in the beginning, but then as you spend more time there, you realize this is actually a really central theme. Anyway, I remember hearing someone, Pullman I think, say that you have to kill the parents. If you think about how in many stories, kids stories, the kids are orphans. When Im watching Marvel movies, and the cities are getting blown up, Im always like, Who cleans this up? Im always just kind of like, My goodness, all the work that they put into that building, and its just rubble now. If there are real consequences to our decisions, then it begins to smack of the real world in a way that is more moving than otherwise. Your kids will never admit it but Wingfeather helps readers see family clearer, not dimmer and homework brighter, not duller. Oh boy. I swear its as bad as Watership Down. Or I think about, you mentioned Berry earlier, theres not a super-sympathetic account of Troy Chatham in Jayber Crow. Sorry if Im being exclusive, but I really do not want to spoil this for people. So it made sense to keep that a bit closed off. And yet, youre able to convey aspects of what drives them and what motivates them through their actions, and we do get these glimmers into what theyre afraid of, what they care about. Have you seen Tenet yet? Davy Joy wasnt a fan, but I thought it was right. You see people working and celebrating and having a beer at the pub. We were outsiders; we moved there when I was 10, and it was a Southern rural town, so everybody was related, and friends, and old families, and I was just this kid with an Illinois lack of accent who didnt belong, and so fantasy novels for me were a way to escape Florida. Lovlies to you if you recognize that. It is hard to make a case that Wingfeather, or any work of fiction, is Christian but Wingfeather has a Christian theological core unlike J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter or Philip Pullmans His Dark Materials. It starts with a g I think. Janner wondered. I only read the first of the Golden Compass books, and I liked it until the end and then I hated it. So Im curious to hear what authors and books helped shape you and shape this series. Reading them as a Christian he evaluates: A few years ago I dug out a few of the fantasy novels I loved and found them mostly empty. And as I thought about that, I think you do have that element to your songwriting, and its certainly there in the stories. But on one condition, Janner has to keep a watchful eye over his brother, Tink, and sister, Leeli. It had to be a boy to turn the Fangs back. But they don't really have any real motivations, desires, regrets, failures, stuff that makes them tick, real struggles, interesting relationships, negative emotions, and layers. Or Be Eaten is a welcome feast of levity--and clearly a labor of love. During the Wingfeather War, Janner was taken to the Fork Factory, and he likely would have not escaped without the help of Sara. But even when I was a kid, I was way more interested in stories that demonstrated that the evils not just out there, theres also a brokenness thats in us; that something outside of us has to overcome. The Fangs arent that way, because the Fangs have mostly given up their humanity. I had no business reading those books, and I hope my kids dont. I mean, he has to. But with Saruman, what corrupts him is just pride and it causes him to turn away from the work hes called to do. It blew my mind how obvious his spite was. I cried when they found each other, and then Artham realized they were flying and spinning in the air. If I cant appeal to either the creative or the theological reasoning part of your brain, then my last resort, the big guns is the anti-book. Im sure there are a lot of loose ends.
