A little dry time is needed (haven't found the perfect amount of time yet) but too muchf dry time and the flake turns to dust! Overall, I would say that the strength of the scent was about 50% of what I remembered when I first opened the tin 6 months earlier . I don't mind the presentation, a "krumble kake". My friend claimed he had an allergic reaction to this stuff, and he is allergic to different sorts of plants. In the tin, this is dark and oily. The flake is readily friable, packs easily, and takes to flame eagerly. MAYBE just a hint of a topping that is reminiscent of dare I say it? Sweeter in cob. Aged, exceptional tobacco. There?s just so much great stuff out there, I might bum a slice from time to time, but I won?t make this one of my regulars. Preparation: The flakes practically fall apart in my hand, despite still being damp. Pretty, well made strips that rubbed out astonishingly easily. I smoked aromatics when I began pipe smoking a year ago, but this is what I smoke. Also when it dries out a bit it really loses complexity and becomes "soapy" - for this reason I would buy it in future in the small tin not the 8oz pack. It is a full, creamy smoke with a Latakia dominant flavor. The perfect full(er)English blend. There is no vanilla in the taste, only a strange interplay between the orientals and latakia. The smell and taste in the mouth of these burning coils of cow sh*t is exactly what Penzance remindes me of. This blend made me believe latakia is not for me, but I am learning to enjoy it in other blends again. If you haven't tried this tobacco yet, then I can only ask one thing, what the devil is the matter with you?!? They are wolves. The problem is, I only got 1 ounce. Test Drive: When fire hit weed, it was apparent that Penzance was indeed a well made English. This is a classic English, Krumble Kake is cool for a change, and it seems to beg comparison with the great English blends like 965, or the one closest to it, Pease's Odyssey. Four stars, only because it is the max I can give it. Even if I do not smoke it regularly, it is truly the finest tasting English tobacco I've had to date. Pipe Used: Tsuge tankard, MM Country Gentleman, MF #9. With nearly 300 reviews I don't have much to add. The Smokey sour scent hits your nose immediately. Also, while it ages very well indeed in a sealed tin, I have no evidence to date that it improves with age in a jar. Sealing them in jars to let them age, drying them for different lengths of time, smoking in different pipes all proved to be futile. No doubt you can taste the Latakia & Orientals. I can understand why this is popular. Nightcap is better. The former wide spectrum of flavor is now more monochromatic; it tastes of dirt and phenol like Pease's Abingdon, q.v. From the onset, the pungency of the latakia and the sweetness of the Virginias stand out, but in short time the Orientals do perk up a bit and subtle flavors redolent of sour cream and ripe blue cheese appear. I have my turns with Latakia, during some periods I am not particularly fond of smoking it, and it was at such a time when I first smoked Penzance. I smoked the last bowl of it in the tree during a cold morning hunt. Then amp it up and get some clouds forming and the VA sweet gives way to delicious Latakia and Oriental complexity that expertly blends all the flavors together into a unique, delicious, relaxing experience. A few more bowls and I was sure I tasted and smelled that hidden aroma. The initial light and the first draw was freaking incredible! Finish: Finishes more heavily without being overwhelming. Still not smokable. All praise for its subtle palette of tastes and creamy mouth feel. It still had that odd feel to it) Penzance filled and lit very well. After so many reviews I will not describe this tobacco, what I will say is that this was a very good smoke. Would give it 5 stars if I could. This stuff is really, really good. This is a high-quality blend that deserves the praise it has earned. This stuff is nice! (226.8 Grams) Penzance is a great English Blend. Several other Esoterica blends have that same iodine scent as a noticeable component of the tin bouquet. This is where the fun stopped however. No artificial flavoring detected, but it definitely tastes like a full bodied, smokey grade A tobacco! At first, I struggled with this blend. I did a smell test and there is a similarity between the antiseptic and the tin. Opening the tin was a revelation of sortsI remember the first time I smelled Latakia, and the second, the third.wonderfully unique stuff. Incredibly smooth and flavorful from start to finish. It will be flufy and take to fire quite well. A very slight medicinal mecurachrome, and lots of sweet, sweet tobacco. I do not find it to be a Latakia Bomb as it has been described by a few. I hope this helps someone to enjoy this great blend. It made my other long time favorite English tobacco taste like used socks. It was a miracle to find an 8 ounce sample, and unheard of to find two, but they're mine, and I've been sampling the wares for a few days now. Smoke is rich and velvety. There were no more moisture problems after mid-bowl, and no bite at any time. The room note is very pleasent while you smoke it but tends to sour after it sets so I might suggest this be an outside smoke. If it weren't for the fact that I'd paid good money for this weed, I'd have thrown in in the garbage. I think I need to try more of the fruit flavored (cherry?) First, this isn't a review but a response. For latakia fanatics, such as myself, this is a fabulous all day smoke too. I had heard latakia was smoky, and it indeed smelled like hickory or beef jerkey, but there was an added element I was not prepared for something that smelled chemical-like (i still cannot pinpoint it). Maximum Purchase: 1. Perhaps that's why this isn't produced at large batches any longer. Packaging: Bag I must say it is wonderful! It's hard to light this puppy up for the first time without having high expectations, given how much buzz it gets. Very nice blend to smoke. This thing had sugar crystals already. This is english pipe tobacco at it's best. UPDATE Nov. 2021. Original review 12/27/2010: I just don't get this one. I pack it loosely, seems to stay lit a bit easier. High quality ingredients are used and I just love pressed tobacco. The interesting thing about Penzance is that it is not a Latakia bomb. It took off with a great volume of smoke and no relights were needed. Never after a meal, and never with Scotch. Look at the number of reviews for this blendwhew. It's just a matter of personal preference. i have been an aromatic smoker for about 3 years and this has single handedly made me a permanent english fan. So strong in fact that I had difficulty concentrating on discovering any of the other nuances or complexities of the blend. You have to understand it. This is monotonous and overpowering, with no subtlety. A delightful English blend that is never tiring or dull. The taste was so pleasing, that I forgot to blow out and inhaled it by accident. I've since tried Krumble Kake, a similar tobacco that just doesn't measure up to Penzance. There's nothing to say that hasn't been said. I smoked this blend for the first time a little over a year ago and was extremely impressed. bag are even more wet / oily. They are both fantastic.
